LE FLY PAN AM- N'Ecoutez Pas
The popular politicized metaphor of the rhizome—a non-hierarchical and self-organizing sprouting of shoots and undergrowth—has always seemed ill-suited to describe the Romantic orchestrations of Godspeed You! Black Emperor, and even less the polished work of Do Make Say Think. On the other hand, Fly Pan Am displays the spirit of this metaphor deeply within their music, not just in their press releases or album art. Already several good records behind them, N'Ecoutez Pas is their finest accomplishment, a stand out recording. It plays like a compilation, surprising expectations, overflowing with ideas. Driving guitar rock is replaced with crackly atmosphere which is replaced with clock-like minimal funk before falling into a freeform breakdown. The changes between are sudden but not indifferent, each working to support the greater collective project. The basic group is supplemented with extra processing by Tim Hecker and Alex St. Onge, as well as many nameless vocalists, whose whispers and exclamations drift in and out of the ever-fluid mix. Not simply Godspeed’s noisier sibling, Fly Pan Am have become themselves. Avail Sept 7th
