Holy shit—this record is top ten of the year good. Here’s the info: The Arcade Fire are a multi-national band based in Montreal, featuring brothers Win and Will Butler. They are a larger group, at times six players strong, with well-employed diverse instrumentation and male and female singers. They synthesize all that is good with contemporary indie rock, sounding like a unique and edgy combination of Neutral Milk Hotel, Polyphonic Spree, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, and Versus. A self-produced CD EP came through here sometime ago and had real promise. Others also took note of this potential, setting off a minor indie signing frenzy: Absolutely Kosher, Alien8 and Merge all tried to woo the group. Deciding on Merge for their full length debut, Funeral improves on what was already significant and good with their past work, promising that The Arcade Fire are soon to be everyone’s new favorite band.
