Could this be Winnipeg, Manitoba’s Built to Spill? Although truthful, we’re only making this facile parallel to frame this ad blurb. The Weakerthan’s are already well known around our land—soon to become even better known everywhere now that they’re on Epitaph. With great album art by Marcel Dzama, another Winnipeg luminary, the Weakerthan’s latest has a literate and mature pop sound. Sometimes it’s a little rocking, other times subdued, but mostly it has an appealing mid-tempo feel, with occasional lap steel helping fill up the mix. In company parlance, some might say this record has cross-over promise, set to push the Weakerthan’s into the next level of the market. While that is no good way to think about anything, let alone music, we’re pretty confident that old Weakerthan’s fans will be able to play Reconstruction Site for all their friends. We’re stocking up on this one for deluge.
