THE SILVER MT. ZION MEMORIAL ORCHESTRA & TRA-LA-LA BAND WITH CHOIR-This Is Our Punk-Rock, Thee Rusted Satellites Gather & Sing
For those who thought Godspeed You Black Emperor wasn’t long enough of a name for a band, The Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra & Tra-la-la Band with Choir has gone and upped the ante—against themselves! Seriously though, this Godspeed side-project has come onto its own with the stirring new record. Four long passages show more articulation than before, the first featuring a punk choir. This element resonates with the theme of the record, a eulogy for lost and fading communities in their hometown of Montreal. Indeed, this is protest music. As the Constellation website puts it, “The amateur choir assembled for the 'fasola' sing-along on the opening track sets the tone for an exuberant community-rallying protest music that constitutes the spiritual foundation of the record.” Acting locally, Constellation says, This is Our Punk Rock, Thee Rusted Satellites Gather & Sing is a metaphor for a larger critical attitude, challenging “the local/universal demise of uncontrolled and unregulated urban landscapes.” Serious stuff, yet beautiful.
