ASHLEY PARK- The Secretariat Motor Hotel
Joined by the likes of Jon Rae Fletcher and Nick from Piano, our own Burrito Brother Terry Miles, has created an astonishing tapestry of country-pop rambling. Beginning with a phantom melody from an upright piano, Terry’s latest songs have a timeless sublime quality, evoking a stripped down pop purity with plenty of heartbreaking twang. Everything is imbued with a melancholic tone – the sage bush weeps, the sun-kissed adobe walls whisper, and the shadow of you on your chopper is your only friend. Is the Secretariat Motor Hotel the new gilded palace of sin? We thing so. No, not some flea bag love motel, but rather the place channeling the heartbreaking beauty of Gram Parsons, Gene Clark and Ray Davies. Great!

SPARROW- s/t
The other night I saw Jason Zumpano leaving the Arts Club after the Bonnie Blue show. A few days later I saw him reading at a café. He took out a pen and drew something on a napkin, rumpling it up and tossing it into the trash. A few hours after that, I saw him sleeping under a tree in Stanley Park. Then it struck me: “I’m in the right place at the right time – I’m witnessing Zumpano the creative genius!” I ran right back to the café, hoping to find the drawing the whiz kid had discarded. It turned out to be some chords (A7 Dm G) and the words to one of the songs on his fine new CD. Overwhelmed, it struck me again: “I am not alone: Zumpano is touching lives all the time, making magic all the time.” Magic and Jason are one and the same. Interchangeable, if you will. Previously, he made a little magic on the records of Zumpano (with Carl Newman of New Pornographers) and Destroyer. This Sparrow record makes those others sound like basic tricks and illusions. The real magic was always Jason. One day Zumpano will be slang for magic. Available Sept 9th.
