SUN KILL MOON- Ghosts of the Great Highway
The Red House Painters were a good band, especially on their last few recordings. Their intelligent songs made us feel sad and contemplative, moved by the dark folk feel of the music. They also rocked out, blowing us away with their Crazy Horse-like intensity. And the ironic cover songs, from Wings tunes to the Star Spangled Banner—what the fuck!?! Some agenda must be lurking within the mind of Mark Kozelek, like a secret policy or obscure future vision. His solo work continued in the same curious vein, spelunking into the emotional darkness, recovering black pearls from the collective unconscious. As good as his solo material could be, though, we longed for the driving band dynamics that made the Red House Painters so formidable and versatile. Sun Kill Moon takes up where the Red House Painters left off, pushing Kozelek to dive even deeper into the dark waters of the soul. What news from the deep?
