Robert Pollard and crew make music like the rest of us make lunch. Yet somehow it’s always worth our effort: smart, catchy and rocking, with a pop-culture wise poetics. For some people, however, this collection is a welcome respite from the regular creative output of these Dayton Ohio natives, seemingly issuing records every other week. “Come on Pollard,” these people exclaim, their bank accounts draining, “is it possible to keep abreast of every GBV release and still save money for our kids to go to university?” Indeed, a serious concern. For a former school teacher, Pollard does seem insensitive to the possible needs of the young—let alone the parents of the young. But, on the other hand, most other people would happily leave their children at home watching television with snack food while their peers attend school in order to afford the entire and ever-growing GBV catalogue. For those rare few stubbornly committed to the supposed future wellbeing of their progeny, this “best of” package will at least keep you informed, spanning GBV’s entire illustrious career. Rock on.
