SAM PREKOP- Who’s Your New Professor
Consistently good, Sam Prekop is well-known to Zulu customers for his work in Shrimp Boat, the Sea and Cake and his 1999 self-titled solo album, which received plenty of play in the store, even making it into some top picks lists for that year. It’s been a long time since this great debut and Who’s Your New Professor is an overdue but welcome return. Prekop is in good form, but this is expected. No matter which project he’s fronting, he has an appealing breeziness, freely mixing soft rootsy blues with dexterous jazzy pop. As with his paintings and photography, Prekop has always been concerned primarily with atmosphere. This recording continues this aesthetic, often eschewing clear-cut song structures for cloud-like shapes that drift in and out of focus. Yet, backed by an ace band of celebrity players and a top production team, Prekop doesn’t just drift away with the weather, instead throwing a little sand into the air for grit. Who’s Your New Professor provides its own answer.
