M WARD- Transistor Radio
Imagine a dinner party where the likes of Jim James (My Morning Jacket), Jenny Lewis (Rilo Kiley), and Howe Gelb (Giant Sand) show up. Their host, the highly talented and highly curly-haired singer-songwriter M Ward, serves a sumptuous Tuscan meal, smartly accompanied by a survey of his treasured collection of 78 rpm recordings of long gone old time soulful crooners. Afterwards, the group retires to the music parlour and bangs out some enchanted recordings that flirt with breezy Dylan-esque pop, skeletal American Appalachian folk and of course a dash of ragged country blues. Sound good? It sure does. This is the rich concoction that M Ward’s latest daring effort Transistor Radio offers. Recorded in the Robert Johnson tradition, this album’s mellow tone resonates with a refined cool air that is strangely uplifting and enthralling.
