MOGWAI- Government Commissions
Some have argued that Scotland’s Mogwai are a band truly and only to behold live, that the recorded facsimile is no substitute for the real thing. A different opinion suggests that the opposite is true, that Mogwai need the time and space of the studio to really realize their atmospheric dynamics, to capitalize on their abilities. The latter view argues that Mogwai’s deliberateness and subtleties might go unnoticed in a live setting, which can be messy and unpredictable, while a recording grants the opportunity for repeated, hermeneutical listening. This new collection confounds both attitudes by presenting a career-spanning collection of live recordings done for the BBC, mostly for John Peel (RIP). Government Commissions finds Mogwai in great and consistently muscular form, issuing waves of fat guitar squall amid slow burning structures. Characteristically, Government Commissions is a demonstration on the dialectics of tension and release and tension and release and tension and release, which has always marked Mogwai’s music. A fine use of taxpayers’ money!
