Oldham is a lyricist more than a musician, strictly speaking. Although sweet and tasteful, his playing is usually secondary to his words and their delivery, and this was clear right from the first Palace Brothers recordings. However, he creates complete pictures with his lyrics, whole vivid worlds out of sometimes spare descriptions. In this sense, Oldham is ideal for soundtrack work, treating filmic images as lyrics to be delivered and supported with music. Besides, over the years his playing has come to meet and match his vocals. For this project, Oldham offered his services to filmmaker Jason Massot, writing poignant acoustic guitar meditations elaborating the life of four seafarers. The result is so striking, picturesque and beautiful that Oldham was compelled to release the music under his given name. Indeed.
