P:ANO- The Den
As you are a dedicated and discerning Zulu customer, we can safely assume that no introductions are necessary here. You own – and cherish – a copy of P:ano’s debut CD When It’s Dark and It’s Summer. You know that these youngsters are absolutely the hottest up-and-coming combo in Vancouver. You’re well aware that they long ago transcended the constant comparisons to Low and Belle & Sebastian that dogged their early days. But – trust me on this – you simply can’t imagine how totally frickin’ awesome their new album The Den is. You can’t imagine but I’ve heard it and I know. Being acquainted with the keyboard player’s boyfriend afforded me the opportunity to… well, borrow his advance copy. Y’know… without asking. On getting the disc home I slipped it into my stereo, hands trembling in nervous anticipation, eyes scanning the liner notes. At once I was awestruck. The cover featured a huge list of guest musicians including members of The Beans, Jerk with a Bomb, Mimi’s Ami, The Secret Three and Standing Wave. Yet there was no credit for the choir of angels, no mention of the New Orleans funeral band… It seemed humbling that a “local” band had realized such audacious musical ambitions, with such apparently careless aplomb. I returned my contraband CD the following day and resolved never to steal again but instead to champion P:ano’s cause wherever I went.
