DESTROYER- Your Blues
One could bust a brain working out the complex paradoxes that surround the purposeful use of mystery. This is one reason why artists are so important. They take on this challenge and pass it on for us ponder anew. Dan Bejar is an artist like this, not just a recording artist, and the difference is important. He is mysterious not to be coy, but as strategy. For him, mystery is decided and thus obviated, and this presents it as a challenge. And his use of mystery is also in respect to pop music, his proper object, which is mysterious itself. Indeed, pop music is mystery par excellence: so precious and private yet so banal and indifferent at once. From the refined pop of Streethawk: A Seduction, to the sprawling pirate rock of This Night, and now to the triumphantalist bourgeois MIDI melancholia of Your Blues, what Bejar makes apparent is that pop music is complexly historical, political and economic, in no sense simple or easy. The mystery is that this fuller reality is consistently misunderstood, perhaps because of its blatancy. And this is Bejar’s challenge to us, stated beautifully and with no misunderstanding, not despite the mystery, because the mystery. Your Blues is another masterwork.
