ANIMAL COLLECTIVE- Sun Tongs
Every band would be satisfied to make a record that is definitive, one collecting all that is good and right about their shit. Even if decline begins, a work like this would transcend subsequent failures, if they occur (as often they do). Sun Tongs may very well be Animal Collective’s shining moment, perhaps even superseding the whole “new weird America” milieu of freaky music. We’re not saying everyone else should put down his or her acoustic guitars, duck calls, ice picks, teakettles and woolly caps. Go on, go forth into the woods of your imagination and get free. But remember, even as the wind blows through your soul and the tree ghosts whisper in your ears, Sun Tongs has already grabbed the sublime. As our good pal Lee Henderson puts it, “Animal Collective started strange and arrived at paranormal.” Old man Lee’s got it right: the Animal Collective has the ear of the gods, and the gods are listening.
