R.J. Krohn drops his follow up to 2002’s landmark “Dead Ringer” album, which could well be the summer soundtrack you’ve been waiting for. Seriously shifting gears and leaving his hip hop roots behind, R.J. forays into everything from laid back AM soul to indie rock to booming electro anthems to smooth downtempo jams. And boy does the man have some tricks up his sleeve! Comparisons to DJ Shadow’s “Private Press” are obvious; RJD2 flexes his comparable ability to draw from all genres, throw everything into the mix, and come up with something interesting and unclassifiable in the process. The lead off single “Exotic Talk” is a blissed out guitar-driven stomping funk track, while “1976” would fit right in as a Tarantino soundtrack with its punchy horn blasts and funky seventies cantina vibe. All in all, “Since We Last Spoke” has something for everyone and begs to be cranked up high with the top down as the summer season kicks into gear.
