OK kids, this is it. The “dance-clap-shout” mantra reverberates through the loudspeaker and three sounds repeat over and over, louder and louder. (UH!UH!UH!) “Can you feel it intensify, can you feel the notes go from mids to highs?” Well, if the answer is yes then you’re ready for “Louden Up Now”, the long awaited new full length from !!! (aka Chk Chk Chk) and first album proper with the Touch and Go stamp of approval. And it’s about time! With a bigger budget to flesh out their ideas and dynamics in the studio than they had when they recorded their self-titled debut in 2001, !!! explore a more varied sound than ever before. Psychedelic flourishes, slowed down quieter moments, and increased use of programmed electronics allow for a more expansive feel and a more interesting overall listening experience. But the trademarks remain intact, with one of the tightest rhythm sections in the game laying down the stomping percussive funk while repetitive guitar lines, horn blasts, and vocal chants punch the air above. The standout track “Hello? Is This Thing On” carries right on where their last single “Me and Giuliani…” (which also appears on the album) left off and just begs for repeated club play. With serious nods to their predecessors Liquid Liquid, the Contortions, and ESG, !!! proudly carry the funk-disco-punk torch high in the air, waving that shit around like they just don’t care. Get ready, the dance party starts now.
