DESTROYER- Notorious Lightning and Other Works
Departure, initiation and return are the integral stages for any great artist’s development. Look at Springsteen’s demo-ish Nebraska, take Dylan’s hijacking of Robertson and his girl-crazy Hawks, or just consider Cohen’s hedonistic sabbatical Death of A Ladies Man. Rock and roll is a mythical journey with deep-seeded psychological significance that requires it’s heroes (a.k.a. the lonely rock and roller) to, on a certain level, be wanton about exploring the creative possibilities of this historically played-out music form, relatively speaking, while also spelunking into the personal and meaningful dark recesses of his or her soul. There is a reason the route less traveled is as such. Certain perils court this uncharted and unfamiliar footing. Thick moss grows on the crags and unfashionable skins from older ceremonies lie discarded along the path – warnings from the crazy mythological beast called ‘industry’ who has claws extending deep into the cultural corazon. Slaying this heinous creature is impossible, not that Daniel Bejar entertains the thought. Rather, toying with it is enough. And so, he furtively invites his pals Frog Eyes into the arena to collaborate on this intense reworking of his astonishing Your Blues material. High treason is in season.
