BRIGHT EYES- I’m Wide Wake, its Morning & Digital Ash in Digital Urn
Everyone’s favorite indie rock boy genius is all grown up and has decided to unleash not one but two brand new records, much to the delight of his ever-growing and broadening fanbase. Steeped in the kind of drama and emotion present in all of Bright Eyes’ releases, these two new records showcase Conor Oberst’s impressive songwriting talent and ability to tell compelling stories in his lyrics. “I’m Wide Awake…” is the folk-roots album of the pair and features guest spots by Emmylou Harris and Jim James of My Morning Jacket, amidst Nashville tinged production and plenty of pedal steel and mandolin. “I’m Wide Awake’s…” darker, ‘80’s- influenced cousin, “Digital Ash…” is a playful album of electro-pop songs on which Conor gives himself the space to try some new things musically and makes us all wonder if label-mates The Faint have been showing Conor a thing or two. Releasing two stylistically different albums at the same time is no doubt a bold move, but you have to give Bright Eyes credit for taking chances and always pushing the envelope.
