DEADBEAT- Something Borrowed, Something Blue
With pioneer Stefan Betke all but abandoning the crackle-dub ship for different transportation, Scott Monteith, better known as Deadbeat, has let go of the “Pole” and taken his first steps toward a distinctive sound. Returning to the cinematic structure of his 2002 debut, Wild Life Documentaries, while not forgetting his dub-techno roots, Monteith gives us an abstract, aural self-portrait with all of the intimacy of a singer/songwriter, but without uttering a single word. Beginning with the elemental dub beat, plus a few new tricks learned from sample wizard and Crakhaus front man Stephen Beaupré, Monteith builds and manipulates layer upon layer of noise and field recordings, making Something Borrowed, Something Blue possibly the only autobiographical record one can shake their ass to. Self-reflection never sounded so good.
